ACTIVITIES AFTER FRAME REMOVAL
After your frame is removed, you may have to wear a cast or a brace on the limb that was lengthened or corrected for a period of time. This will give your bones a little longer to heal and consolidate (strengthen). The length of time that you may have to wear a brace or a cast is dependent on how well your bone has consolidated. Your surgeon will make the determination whether you will require a brace or a cast.
Your surgeon will likely recommend that you continue your exercises and increase your activity level. Motion and bearing weight on your affected limb promotes bone healing and strengthening.
Following your frame removal and casting/bracing the focus will be primarily on increasing any range of motion, which has been lost in your joints and then strengthening. On a long-term basis we advocate a maintenance program of flexibility and strengthening. This can include yoga exercises, Pilates and a strength-training program, which may need to be individualized for your condition. Also, we strongly recommend cardiovascular non-impact activities such as biking, swimming, and the use of certain cardiovascular machines such as an elliptical trainer, Stairmaster and a stationary bike. In general, running and jumping activities should be avoided
